FROM MR. HUNT
|
|
Parents:
Character Education in January - Courage As part of the monthly theme, I have spent some time with other faculty members addressing the issue of courage in junior high homerooms. We spent time talking about the courage it takes to be nice and the courage it takes to stand up to bullies.
more
We tried to share some tools that can help your students in the future. If you have a junior high student, please take a minute and ask them about this. It would be a great subject to talk about with your student.
Minimal Day – February 7th Our second Minimal Day for this school year is on February 7th. School will be let out at 12:30 pm. Teachers will hold professional development after that. We will run a modified junior high schedule. Please plan on picking your students up at 12:30 pm on the 7th.
Parent/Teacher Conferences- Feb 15th-16th Please mark your calendars for Parent Teacher Conferences. I would like to remind you that parent/teacher conference is a great time to get an update about how your student is doing and is not the ideal time to have a long conversation about your student. We have times scheduled every 15 minutes for the elementary teachers, and we expect conversations with the Junior High teachers to last about 5 minutes. If you feel your visit is going to take longer or your visit at parent/teacher conference is going long, please make an appointment with the teacher at a different time so they will have more time to meet with you. This will help the teachers stay on time with appointments and cut down on the lines outside of their classes.
Elementary teachers will be in their classroom and all junior high teachers will be in the gym. Hours will be from 3:00-8:00 on Tuesday, February 15th, and from 3:00-6:00 on Wednesday, February 16th. There will be a sign-up sheet starting the week of Feb 6th at the front desk for all elementary students.
Thank you,
Mr. Hunt

JAZZ READING CONTEST
|
|
Lincoln's Jazz Reading contest began Friday, the 22nd of January and will run thru February 22. Elementary students have been challenged to read as many minutes as possible during this month-long event. Below are the challenges for each student per week:
more
K-1st graders – 4 hours each student a week 2nd-3rd graders – 6 1/2 hours each student a week 4th-6th graders – 9 hours each student a week
We are doing many fun things to help encourage your student to read, read, read. Weekly, top classes with the most reading minutes will receive a treat and their teachers will get to wear a Jazz jersey for a day. Twice during the contest the top reading student from each grade will have the opportunity to be in a pie throwing contest during a few school assemblies. February 9th is our after school reading party from 2:30 until 4:00 pm. The winning class overall gets a free dress day. If we are in the top 10 schools participating in Utah (we were #14 last year), we will get the opportunity to have a Jazz player come for an ice cream party with our students.
Please remember that you CAN read out loud to your student(s) but books on tape, cereal boxes, movie subtitles and signs on the road do not count towards their totals. Only reading done out of school should be recorded and signed by you. Reading minutes are due to your child's teacher every Monday.
Besides the fun and challenge for the students, we wanted to let the parents know this period of reading has shown great results in raising reading and other subjects’ scores – as reading is involved in most of them. We hope each family will encourage and help their children get involved in this event.

BUSINESS VOLUNTEERS

Note: This Friday’s Super i-Excel activity to the movie “Megamind” at the Water Gardens theater is sponsored by Red Robin and Hooper’s restaurants. We really appreciate their generosity to make this activity possible.
The science classes for Mr. Kuepper...
more
would like to thank Susan and Brent Hirschi for their generous donation to help improve the experience for all 7th grade students. We were able to take a field trip on January 10th to the Dinosaur exhibit at Thanksgiving Point. This trip would not have been possible without the contribution from the Hirschi family. I haven’t seen the students more excited than they were when I told them about the field trip. I’m excited for the future possibilities for using the remaining donation. The students and I would like to extend our sincere gratitude to our sponsor, Mr. and Mrs. Brent and Susan Hirschi.
Mrs. Hiatt’s class sponsor is Mark and Denise Anderson. Mrs. Hiatt says, “I am so grateful for the Andersons’ support of our class. Having taught for many years without a sponsor, I especially appreciate this program. Because of the Andersons, we are able to do so many things that make Kindergarten fun. Some of the things we have planned for this year are field trips to the SCERA theater to see a play and to Thanksgiving Point to see the animals. We are also looking forward to Daddies and Doughnuts and our Mother's Tea. Kindergarten is very "hands on" and all those "hands on" materials can add up to a substantial amount. Thank you!”
Mrs. Roberts’ class has benefited in a variety of ways from our classroom sponsor, Larry and Deanne Lindstrom of Leisure Villas Active Retirement. Thanks to the Lindstroms, we have been able to beef up our classroom library with bookshelves and books. Guided reading is a very important part of our second grade class, and the students are ready to start choosing books on their own. With our classroom funds we have been able to buy some books which have excited the children to read. One of their favorites is the A to Z Mysteries series by Ron Roy. There are 26 chapter books in this series that are just right for many of the second graders. Many of the children have set a goal to read all 26 this year. The Lindstroms are also always willing to do unique things to make our celebrations special, from bringing a real turkey for the children to pet and play with, to making delicious "dead bread" for our Day of the Dead celebration. Our class is very grateful for the educational opportunities the sponsor funds have provided our class.
