Last Day of School
The last day of school is Friday, May 27th. It is a Free Dress day as well as a short day. School will be released that day at 11:00.

Summer Classes/Camps

I want to remind you that we are offering summer classes. If you have a junior high student that has struggled in math, we have summer school that can help them make up some of their grades. We also have science classes for students currently in 8th and 9th grade where they can get elective science credit.

Summer Education

I find that students who continue to do some educational work over the summer will perform better the next year. Parents can do a lot at home during the summer to help students prepare for the next year. Daily reading and math facts can do a lot to help students. Additionally, parents can continue to use our online subscription to Lexia throughout the summer to help students become better readers.

Recently in talking with a parent she said "My first grade son recently made a huge jump in his reading thanks to Lexia. In the past he has only worked on Lexia at home inconsistently. I wanted him to work on it more, so I found an incentive that would motivate him. He ended up doing Lexia 30-60 minutes every day for two weeks. I was happy that he was spending his screen time doing something educational and he was happy earning a reward, but the real reward came when his teacher sent home a note saying that he moved up three guided reading levels. I really think that doing Lexia consistently made the difference. Thank you Lincoln Academy for providing this reading program for us to use at home. I am definitely going to make Lexia part of my son’s summer routine!"

If you would like to learn more about Lexia you can contact Mr. Hinton- hinton@lincoln-academy.org.

Another way to engage students is through educational apps. There are many apps that help student develop their basic skills. Plan now for an hour of educational work a day, which can go a long way to help your student succeed next year.

Khan Academy
Khan Academy is a great way to help your older students continue their summer learning. Check out Khan Academy and learn more at http://www.khanacademy.org/about. I highly recommend this as a great educational resource.

PARENT COUNCIL NEWS

Dear Lincoln Families,

As the school year comes to a close, I must say thank you to all my Parent Council Committee Chairs and to all those on their committees. You really made my job easy. This year was a huge success because of all of you.  Lincoln Academy is a great school because of all that you do!

I would like to introduce Sherilyn Gustafson as your new Parent Council President. She has some great ideas for next year, and I hope you will consider joining her on the Parent Council.  It's a great place to serve the needs of the school. It has been my pleasure being this year’s president.

I will leave you with the words of William Shakespeare.

"I can no other answer make but thanks, and thanks; and ever thanks.”

Have a safe and wonderful summer!

Jennifer Christensen

PC President

PARENT COUNCIL NEEDS FOR THE 2016-2017 SCHOOL YEAR

We need to fill two positions on the Parent Council ASAP. Please contact Sherilyn Gustafson if you are interested in serving in either position. sheri@gusgirl.com

President Elect:  This is a two year commitment. You would serve the first year as the President Elect, assisting and shadowing the Parent Council President. Then you would serve as the Parent Council President for the 2017-2018 school year.

Teacher Appreciation Committee Chair:  We need someone to head up Teacher Appreciation. You already have an experienced committee of two who are ready and willing to assist you. We just need a leader.

SUMMER DONATION COLLECTION

We will be collecting donations over the summer for any of our parent council programs. Just drop them by the school during summer office hours (10:00-1:00). Donations may include items for the box tops store, and items from local businesses that can be used as prizes for Jazz Reading, Inspirations, and other programs.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT RECESS EQUIPMENT

We continue to struggle to find a solution to the recess equipment dilemma at Lincoln Academy. We are talking mostly about the balls that the parent council purchases using box tops funds. Hundreds of dollars in balls were recently replaced, we purchased a new durable container for them, but within a week every ball was gone. As a parent council we are considering spending recess equipment funds on more permanent, durable equipment, equipment that cannot easily be kicked over the fence or up onto the roof!

So what do we propose to do about balls? We will be accepting donations of balls from families.  We encourage you to write “Donated by the (YOUR NAME) Family” on each ball that you donate.  You may count one volunteer hour for every $15 spent on balls. We are hoping that the students will feel more ownership and responsibility as they help provide the equipment. They could even work to earn some of the money. Thank you for your help with this. Balls can be brought into the office over the summer. Students may also bring their own ball from home to play with each day.

RESTAURANT FUNDRAISER

Tuesday, May 17th at Zupas in American Fork.

(599 W. Main Street)

5-9 pm, dine-in only.

Be sure to present the voucher to the cashier, and Lincoln will receive up to 25 % of your bill.

BOX TOPS NEWS

The Box Tops Store was a great success. We raised $949.10 over the school year. Thank you to all of the parents who supported the store with donations, service hours, and box tops clipped and sent in with students. The children loved shopping at the store! Keep clipping box tops this summer to be ready when the store opens again next year!

We will be cleaning out the shed this summer. This may be a great opportunity for scouts looking for community service hours! You can also count those hours as volunteer hours for the school. Watch Facebook for more details.
