FROM MR. HUNT
|
|
Time has flown. It is hard to believe it is already November. It is a fun time of year to be in school. The holidays bring a little extra excitement into the students. The trick is to try and harness this excitement! A few items for you:

Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees has selected Rob Murphy to fill the Financial Manager/Treasurer position on the board. Rob and his family have been a part of Lincoln since the beginning. We thank him for his willingness to serve the school and we are excited to have him as part of the Board of Trustees.
Focus on Instruction
As principal, my job is to make sure that your students are receiving sound educational instruction and that they are learning in all facets of educational life. I am making it more of a priority to be in the classroom and meeting with teachers to discuss instructional and student data. In order to better serve in this capacity, I have set office hours where I will be available by appointment to meet with parents. I will be available on Tuesdays from 11-12; Wednesdays from 7:30-8:30 and Thursdays from 1:30-2:30.
As has always been the case, before you approach me with a concern that involves a teacher, I would appreciate that you try and address this with the teacher first. I have found that 98% of the time teachers and parents can work through most problems when a conversation takes place. I am more than happy to be of help if this does not work. If you have talked to a teacher and have not been able to work things out, you can email or talk to Mrs. Kinkade (kinkade@lincoln-academy.org). She can set up an appointment for you. If one of the times listed above does not work, you can email me and if we need to meet in person, I will have Mrs. Kinkade contact you and set up another time.
End of Term - Report Cards
The end of 1st term was Friday, October 29th. Your junior high students will have their report cards emailed to you and your elementary students will be given their report cards on Friday, November 5th.
Morning Carpool
Some of you may have noticed that from 7:54-8:00 the carpool is very busy and you sometimes have to wait a long time. If you want to avoid traffic and congestion, there is hardly anyone here from 7:45-7:53. If you arrive during those times, you will be able to drive directly in, drop off your students and avoid any congestion.

GEOGRAPHY BEE
|
|
The Lincoln Academy Geography Bee will be held on Friday, December 10th for 4th - 8th graders. Here is some information to help your student prepare for the Geography Bee.
more
Preparation for the Geography Bee
- Get the Necessary Tools: A good, up-to-date world map, atlas, and geography reference book are your best study tools, along with blank outline maps (http://www.nationalgeographic.com/xpeditions/atlas/) with which to practice locating places.
- Learn Map Terminology: Understanding what you're looking at and correctly reading labels and coordinates on a map are essential.
- Understand the Interconnectedness of Geography: Subdivisions of geography, such as physical features, climate, and culture, are all influenced by each other. Once you understand this, it will be easier to categorize and remember information about countries and regions.
- Follow Current Events: News items regarding political upheavals, international agreements, and discoveries are fair game for Bee questions, so make sure you are an informed citizen of the world. See the National Geographic News (http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/) site for recent stories.
- Analyze the Questions: Visit the National Geographic Sample Questions (http://www.nationalgeographic.com/sample_questions/) page to see the types of questions asked in the Bee and to learn how you can look for clues within the questions to help you figure out the right answers.
- Keep Geography Fun: There are many games you can play to help study for the Bee. Check out the GeoBee Challenge (http://www.nationalgeographic.com/geobee/today.html#/start) , with ten new questions each day, and GeoSpy (http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/kids/games/geographygames/geospy/) , to test your map skills.

LUNCHTIME MICROWAVE USE
|
|
We have had several younger (1st -3rd) students burn themselves and not know how to operate the microwaves. Some of them expect the TA's to cook the meal for them. The TA's have other supervisory responsibilities and they are not available to help them cook their meal. Please limit the microwaveable items that you send with your 1st-3rd grade students.
Also (for all grades), due to the high number of students using the microwaves, please limit microwaveable foods sent for lunch to items that can be cooked/reheated in under 2 minutes and be sure to include the appropriate utensils.

HALLOWEEN COSTUME COLLECTION
|
|
Is your basement getting overstocked with previous years' Halloween costumes?
The Lincoln Academy Parent Council would like to collect clean, gently used costumes of all sizes to sell at a $5 Costume Shop at the fall carnival next year. Please bring your costume donations to the collection boxes in the front lobby by November 12. Hopefully, this will be a great way to clean out old costumes and get a great deal on costumes for next year.

FOOD AND COAT DRIVE / COLLEGE FOOTBALL SPIRIT DAY
|
|
The Lincoln Academy food and coat drive will be held Monday, November 15th to Tuesday, November 23rd. We will be collecting donations of nonperishable food items and coats and jackets again this year.
(See the attached list of requested items.)
In the spirit of our in-state football rivalry, students will be able to vote for their favorite school (BYU or U of U) by donating cans in the appropriate bin at the front office. Points will be earned as follows:
more
Each food item will be worth 1 point, while coat donations count for 25 points. As a school, we are setting a goal to reach 10,000 points.
All donations to be counted in the point system and to determine which team wins must be turned in by 10:00 am on Nov. 23rd! Which team has the most giving fans??
Additionally, students will be allowed to wear either BYU or Utah shirts/jackets/or sweaters on Tuesday, Nov. 23 to cheer on their favorite team. If they don’t have BYU or Utah shirts/jackets/or sweaters, students are welcome to wear red or blue shirts. It is not a free dress day. Students not participating need to be in uniform. All students need to have appropriate uniform pants or skirts and shoes.
