GEOGRAPHY BEE

The Lincoln Academy Geography Bee will be held on December 7th for 4th - 8th graders. The winner of Lincoln Academy's Geography Bee will have the opportunity to compete in the Utah State Geography Bee at Thanksgiving Point in the spring. Here is some information to help your student prepare for the Geography Bee.

Preparation for the Geography Bee

1.Get the Necessary Tools: A good, up-to-date world map, atlas, and geography reference book are your best study tools, along with blank outline maps with which to practice locating places.

2.Learn Map Terminology: Understanding what you're looking at and correctly reading labels and coordinates on a map are essential.

3.Understand the Interconnectedness of Geography: Subdivisions of geography, such as physical features, climate, and culture, are all influenced by each other. Once you understand this, it will be easier to categorize and remember information about countries and regions.

4.Follow Current Events: News items regarding political upheavals, international agreements, and discoveries are fair game for Bee questions, so make sure you are an informed citizen of the world. See the National Geographic News site for recent stories.

5.Analyze the Questions: Visit the National Geographic Sample Questions page to see the types of questions asked in the Bee and to learn how you can look for clues within the questions to help you figure out the correct answers.

6.Keep Geography Fun: There are many games you can play to help study for the Bee. Check out the GeoBee Challenge, with ten new questions each day, and GeoSpy, to test your map skills.

LABELS FOR EDUCATION

Lincoln Academy will be having a contest to see which class can collect the most Labels for Education. These labels can be found on lots of different products that you probably use every day. Before you throw an empty can of soup or empty package of pens away, check the packaging by the UPC code and if it says “Labels for Education” just cut it out and send it to school with your child.

more

A complete list of participating products can be found here. Boxes in each classroom are provided for collecting the labels.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION

Wow! Lincoln students and parents with your help we collected a RECORD number of Box Tops for Lincoln! Thank you so much for your support! We collected over 9700 valid Box Tops which means $970.00 for Lincoln Academy! You are really making a difference. Thanks for taking the time to buy Box Top products and clipping and sending them in!

more

Our next elementary contest will run from December 15th through February 15th. Keep on collecting and clipping. The Junior High contest is running now through homerooms. The homeroom that collects the most Box Tops between now and December 15th wins a free dress day. Send them in with your junior high students so they can get in on the fun, as well.

A note went home on Wednesday/Thursday November 7/8 with instructions on how to link your Smith's rewards card to ebox top redemption. If you have a chance to do this it would be fantastic and will mean even more money for Lincoln without having to do any work except signing up. Box Tops for Education will automatically send ebox tops to our school for qualifying purchases and you don't have to do anything else.

Thank you so much for your support! And keep clipping!

RE-ENROLLMENT

ALL families must re-enroll. Re-enrollment will be held in the school Library on Tuesday and Wednesday, January 15th and 16th from 7:45 a.m. until 3:15 p.m. A parent will be required to return the re-enrollment form and verify this information with a member of the Enrollment Committee on one of these dates.

more

Please plan about 30 - 45 minutes for this process. Volunteer hours will be verified at this time. We ask that 25 of the requested 40 annual volunteer hours be completed by re-enrollment. If you currently have siblings on our waiting lists, or have an incoming kindergartner, please make sure the bottom portion of the re-enrollment form is completed. If Lincoln Academy has available positions, siblings of currently enrolled students will be given sibling preference based upon completion of all volunteer hours.

Lincoln Academy is still in need of some sponsors. A class/program sponsorship is $500. Should you choose to be a sponsor, as a thank you, Lincoln Academy will waive your 40 volunteer hours. If you are interested in our sponsorship program please contact Josephine North at the front desk to inquire about the available sponsorships.

Parents of our current 6th graders: Please be aware that a TDap or Td booster will be required for entry into 7th grade. Please make arrangements for this immunization to be administered.

DOLLAR DRESS DAY

The Lincoln Academy Parent Council hosts Dollar Dress Days on the first Wednesday of each month. Students bring a dollar for the option to wear free dress. (Appropriate free dress can be found at the end of the uniform policy.) This free dress day is totally optional. Students are encouraged to earn their own dollar to pay for their free dress option.

SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM

We are pleased to announce that Lincoln Academy will now be serving lunch ourselves and not through an outside vendor. Please look at our menu and help your student determine when and what they would like to eat. Lunch is $2.25 per person per day. Students (or parents) pay for lunch at the front office.

more

Each morning teachers will take a count of how many students in their class want hot or cold lunch and Mrs. Lum, our kitchen manager, will collect the count. Extra lunches will be added to our count in case students arrive late. Thank you for your patience as we improve our lunch program for your students.

Changes to the menu will sometimes be made without notice depending on what food is delivered and how many students order lunch that day.
