FROM MR. HUNT
|
|
It is now October- it is amazing how time flies. Thank you for all that you have done to support the school and your students. Thanks for donating supplies to our classes, supplies for your children, participating in the Fall Carnival, driving on field trips, and signing up to help in the classroom. Your efforts help make our school better and afford a better education for your student. Thank you for everything! I am confident that as educators, parents and students work together, the quality of education increases.

Parent/Teacher Conferences
Thank you to all parents who came to parent/teacher conferences. There was a great turn-out in the elementary and a solid one for the Junior High. If you missed parent/teacher conferences, you can still set up an appointment to meet with your student's teacher or communicate by email.
Mid-Term/Junior High Graduation Requirements
Junior High parents should have received an email with their students' mid-term report last week.They are password protected. Just enter your student’s ID number to open the document. We are implementing Junior High Graduation requirements. The requirements are found here. Please work with your junior high students to help them remain eligible to attend graduation.
Halloween
I know that many are deciding Halloween costumes already. Just a reminder that at Lincoln no masks are allowed. Additionally, staff must be able to identify who the students are. There is no cross-dressing or weapons allowed and costumes must be modest and not offend any group of people.
Fundraising
I recently emailed a letter home to parents to help explain the philosophy of Lincoln Academy and it's fundraising plan for the year. Please take the time to review this and plan on ways to continue to support Lincoln Academy.
Thank you,
Jake Hunt, Principal

SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM
|
|
We are pleased to announce that Lincoln Academy will now be serving lunch ourselves and not through a vendor. Please look at our menu and help your student determine when and what they would like to eat. Lunch is $2.25 per person per day. Each morning teachers will take a count of how many students in their class want hot or cold lunch and Mrs. Lum our kitchen manager will collect the count. Extra lunches will be added to our count in case students arrive late. Thank you for your patience as we improve our lunch program for your students.

We have had questions and concerns about the food that is being served and the new federal guidelines. The guidelines are outlined below in an excerpt from a Dept. of Agriculture document.
The proposed rule sought to increase the availability of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free and low-fat fluid milk in the school menu; reduce the levels of sodium, saturated fat and trans fat in school meals; and meet the nutrition needs of school children within their calorie requirements. The intent of the proposed rule was to provide nutrient-dense meals (high in nutrients and low in calories) that better meet the dietary needs of school children and protect their health. The proposed changes, designed for meals offered to school children in grades Kindergarten (K) to 12, were largely based on the IOM recommendations set forth in the report ‘‘School Meals: Building Blocks for Healthy Children’’ (October 2009).
In summary, the January 2011 proposed rule sought to improve lunches and breakfasts by requiring schools to:
• Offer fruits and vegetables as two separate meal components;
• Offer fruit daily at breakfast and lunch;
• Offer vegetables daily at lunch, including specific vegetable subgroups weekly (dark green,orange, legumes, and other as defined in the 2005 Dietary Guidelines) and a limited quantity of starchy vegetables throughout the week;
• Offer whole grains: half of the grains would be whole grain-rich upon implementation of the rule and all grains would be whole-grain rich two years post implementation;
• Offer a daily meat/meat alternate at breakfast;
• Offer fluid milk that is fat-free (unflavored and flavored) and low-fat (unflavored only);
• Offer meals that meet specific calorie ranges for each age/grade group;
• Reduce the sodium content of meals gradually over a 10-year period through two intermediate sodium targets at two and four years post implementation;
• Prepare meals using food products or ingredients that contain zero grams of trans fat perserving;
• Require students to select a fruit or a vegetable as part of the reimbursable meal;
• Use a single food-based menu planning approach; and
• Use narrower age/grade groups for menu planning. Dept. of Agriculture, January 26, 2012

PIZZA MONDAYS
|
|
We switched pizza vendors to Dominoes Pizza on Monday, October 1st. Pizza now offers a whole grain crust that complies with Federal Guidelines.
We are offering multiple choices: Cheese, Pepperoni, Kickin’ Chicken and Smokehouse.
We can no longer accept pizza by the slice orders. If your child wants pizza they need to order the complete lunch for $2.25. Extra pizza slices are available with a lunch for an additional $1. Please include the extra money in your child’s lunch account.

STUDENTS WITH ALLERGIES
|
|
Each year at Lincoln we provide all classrooms with emergency supplies. We include Nature Valley Oats 'N Honey granola bars for each student as an emergency food supply. If your child has allergies to any of the following: soy, peanuts, almonds or pecans, you will need to provide an alternative snack for their emergency food supply.

Elementary students: Please pack 2 small snack items in a single ziploc sandwich or quart sized bag with the child's name and the words "Emergency Preparedness" on it and deliver it to their teacher.
Jr. High students: Please pack 8 snacks bags, 7 if your child has released time. 2 small snack items in each of the 8/7 ziploc sandwich or quart sized bags, with the child's name and the words "Emergency Preparedness" on them and deliver them to each of their teachers. LABELS FOR EDUCATION
|
|
We will be collecting Labels for Education again this year. We had a lot of points turned in last year and want to make it even better this year! The Labels for Education program is similar to Box Tops for Education. You cut off the UPC code of participating products and send them in to your child’s classroom. A lot of products you already buy may qualify for this program including: Campbell’s products, BIC products, Pepperidge Farm Goldfish and Pop Secret. A complete list of qualifying products and more information can be found here.
more
Additionally, some retailers will automatically add points to our school account when you purchase qualifying products. If you purchase the product and turn in the UPC code, our school will receive double points. One of these participating retailers is Smith’s. For a complete list of participating retailers and to sign up, please visit elabelsforeducation.com.
We will be having a contest to see which classroom can collect the most Labels for Education UPC code points. It will run until Dec. 7. The classroom with the most points will get to choose the prize they want for their classroom. Some of the prizes include: playground equipment and art supplies. When clipping labels, please remember to only cut out the UPCcode and send that in. Each classroom has a collection tin for your child to deposit the labels.

more
You can also access the Box Top Marketplace which features many of your favorite onlineretailers like WalMart, Target, Lands End, Aeropostale, Children's Place and many, many more. Each time you access and purchase at these sites through the Marketplace (just a few extra clicks) you earn E-box tops for our school. These really add up quickly and can make a huge difference in the amount of money we earn each year. So head on over and sign up!
When you order online through these retailers, write down the number of Box Tops earned with your child's name on them and put them in their classroom collections so they count towards the final classroom count. Our first contest prize is a pizza party for the classroom that collects the most valid (non-expired) Box Tops! Start clipping and sending them in.
Remember to trim your Box Tops and to check their expiration dates. Box Tops for Education will not accept any expired Box Tops, and they won't count for classroom totals. We were able to purchase some great recess equipment for the elementary classrooms and some sports uniforms last year with our Box Top money. Thank you for your partipation.

DOLLAR DRESS DAY
|
|
The Lincoln Academy Parent Council hosts Dollar Dress Days on the first Wednesday of each month. Students bring a dollar for the option to wear free dress. (Appropriate free dress can be found at the end of the uniform policy on the school website.) This free dress day is optional. Students are encouraged to earn their own dollar to pay for their free dress option.
We will be giving a hand stamp when the students pay their dollar and doing random stamp checks in the classrooms. We would like to have 2-3 volunteers come from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on the first Wednesday to help with checks.
Please contact Zara Quintana (PC Treasurer) if you plan to volunteer with collections and handstamps before school or from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. 801-735-9603 zarasbookkeeping@gmail.com.
