FROM MR. HUNT

It is now October- it is amazing how time flies. Thank you for all that you have done to support the school and your students. Thanks for donating supplies to our classes, supplies for your children, participating in the carnival, driving on field trips, and signing up to help in the classroom. Your efforts help make our school better and afford a better education for your student. Thank you for everything! I am confident that as educators, parents and students work together, the quality of education increases.

BYOD and Schoology
We are making great strides as our junior high students and teachers have been using personal devices.  I have seen students creating videos, researching information and sharing it in discussions, answering polls, taking notes, and using it for other fun and creative projects. We have made a great effort to get all students registered for Schoology.  This will be replacing all Junior High teacher newsletters.  I have seen lots of good things happening on Schoology.  I have seen students talking with students, teachers responding to students questions at eight or nine o'clock at night, and teachers posting engaging videos and links that are relevant to the curriculum.  Teachers have created ePub books which will allow students to view these on iPad, iPod, Kindle, Nook, and computer technology.

Parent/Teacher Conferences
Thank you to all parents who came to parent/teacher conferences.  There was a great turn-out in the elementary and a solid one for junior high.  If you missed parent/teacher conference, you can still set up an appointment to meet with your student's teacher or just communicate by email.

Mid-Term/Junior High Graduation Requirements
Junior High parents should have received an email with their students' mid-term report last week.  They are password protected.  Just enter your students' ID number to open the document.  We are implementing Junior High Graduation requirements.  The requirements are found at http://www.lincoln-academy.org/newsite/pdf/Jr.%20High%20Graduation%20Requirements.pdf. Please work with your junior high students to help them remain eligible to attend graduation.

Halloween
I know that many are deciding Halloween costumes already.  Just a reminder that at Lincoln no masks are allowed.  Additionally, staff must be able to identify who the students are, there is no cross-dressing or weapons allowed, costumes must be modest and not offend any group of people.

School Mascot
The student council had the desire to change the mascot of Lincoln Academy.  After a vote of the 5-9th grade student body, the large majority were in favor of a change.  As part of spirit week, suggestions were given to the student council, approved, and three possible selections were presented to the student-body.  The students voted to become the Lincoln Academy Thunderhawks.

FALL CARNIVAL

We would like to thank everyone who came and supported the carnival--especially all of our volunteers!   Hopefully everyone had a lot of fun!  Proceeds from the carnival and silent auction are used to run the activities the Parent Council sponsors during the school year, so we appreciate all of your support

COSTUME DONATIONS

The parent council would like to collect your outgrown or unwanted Halloween costumes to sell in our costume shop at the fall carnival next year.  Donation boxes are located in the main foyer of the school.  Donations will be accepted until Friday, November 11.

RESTAURANT FUNDRAISER

Thanks to everyone who came out to our restaurant fundraiser last month.  We earned $332!!  And congratulations to Mr. Bingham's class who won the fundraiser participation contest!

This month's restaurant fundraiser night is at Pizza Pie Cafe in Highland, a favorite among many of our families.

more

The all-you-can-eat buffet of salad, pizzas galore and pasta is very well priced and the atmosphere is great!  They are such a generous restaurant that they give us 3 days to come in.  So come in anytime Tuesday, Wednesday and/or Thursday, October 11-13th for lunch, an after-school meal, or dinner, and they'll give 25% of your bill back to our school!  Just remember to bring in the fundraiser card that will come home with your children on Monday, October 10th!!!  Thanks everyone for your support!

MOVIE NIGHT

The Parent Council is hosting a Movie Night at Water Gardens Theater in Pleasant Grove on October 27th. You can attend any movie starting at 5 pm that night.  Make sure when you buy your movie tickets that you mention you are from Lincoln Academy and we will get the proceeds from the ticket sales.  Water Gardens Theater has generously offered us the proceeds from ticket sales (if you mention Lincoln Academy) and they will collect the proceeds from concessions.  This is a great opportunity to support Lincoln –just see a movie!

HALLOWEEN PARADE

We are excited about our Halloween Parade this year!  The Parade is on October 31st at 1:20 in the gym.  We will have some yummy treats to buy during the Parade.  Come and see your students and their friends in all of their fun costumes.

We are asking for parent volunteers to help right after the parade to sweep up and clean up.  Plan on getting in some volunteer time since you'll already be at the school.

HALLOWEEN COSTUMES

Many parents are starting to look for Halloween costumes. Lincoln Academy is always concerned about your child's safety. Halloween presents some additional dangers. The school's guidelines for Halloween are first and foremost that you make sure your child can still play and move around in his or her costume safely. In addition, the following regulations will be in place for all costumes:

more

·    No masks.
·    No weapons.
·    No cross-dressing.
·    No costumes that demean or belittle ethnic groups, nationalities, or religions.
·    Costumes must be modest.
·    Students must be able to be identified.

If your student chooses not to dress in an obvious costume on this day, he or she must be in uniform. Non-uniform, "normal" clothes do not constitute a costume. If your student doesn't follow these regulations and guidelines, he or she will be asked to change costumes or be in uniform. Students will be allowed to come to school dressed in their costume on Monday, Oct 31st  and wear their costumes the whole day.

SPIRIT WEAR

Every Friday is Spirit Dress Day. Students may wear their Lincoln Academy T-shirts from any year’s purchase along with their uniform pants. Just a reminder: all clothing worn to school must be in good condition and sized correctly.

DOLLAR DRESS DAY

The Lincoln Academy Parent Council hosts Dollar Dress Days on the first Wednesday of each month. Students bring a dollar for the option to wear free dress. (Appropriate free dress can be found at the end of the uniform policy linked from the school website.) This free dress day is totally optional. Students are encouraged to earn their own dollar to pay for their free dress option.

more

We will be giving a hand stamp when the students pay their dollar. We would like to have 2-3 volunteers come from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. to help so the Jr. High Seminary students that are just getting to school can participate.

GENERAL MILLS BOX TOPS COLLECTION CONTEST

It's time for our fall Box Tops collection contest for grades K-6! The competition ends on Wed., Oct. 14. Gather all the General Mills Box Tops you've collected over the summer and put them in your class container. Please check the expiration dates and only send valid box tops. Also, the expiration date must be legible to be valid. The winning class will receive an ice cream party, so bring them in and win!

(Note: Jr. High students are welcome to bring in Box Tops to the front office. Every Box Top benefits the school!)

more

Please take a minute to look through the list of online merchants and do your holiday shopping through the BoxTops4Education website. It only takes a few minutes to become a Box Tops member, which will also allow you to print coupons for Box Tops products.

CLASS SPONSORS

What's more, the activities are not just fun but educational. Thanks so much Mr. and Mrs. Cook.
